Circle Expands Blockchain Patent Leadership

Circle acquired fundamental assets from IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio, adding more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents. The portfolio covers blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. As a result, Circle now holds the largest blockchain patent portfolio in the United States.

The expanded intellectual property portfolio supports Circle’s growing financial infrastructure business. The assets strengthen development across USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc, and other blockchain products. In addition, the acquisition broadens Circle’s technology foundation for future onchain financial services.

Circle did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction. The company also did not confirm whether IBM retained any licensing rights after the sale. However, Circle stated that both companies plan to explore additional commercial opportunities following the agreement.

IBM Portfolio Supports Circle’s Long-Term Strategy

IBM built one of the largest blockchain patent portfolios during the industry’s rapid growth period. The company focused heavily on blockchain solutions for supply chains, enterprise systems, financial services, and secure cloud infrastructure. However, IBM gradually reduced blockchain patent filings after reaching peak activity between 2018 and 2019.

Circle intends to use the acquired patents to strengthen its internet-native financial infrastructure. The company continues expanding services around USDC while developing payment networks and blockchain infrastructure products. Consequently, the additional intellectual property supports broader product development across its ecosystem.

Circle received its first blockchain-related patent in December 2023. Since then, the company has continued building proprietary technology supporting digital payments and blockchain infrastructure. The IBM portfolio significantly expands that foundation with mature technologies covering multiple enterprise applications.

Patent Acquisition Adds Industry Context for CRCL

The acquisition reflects increasing competition around blockchain infrastructure and intellectual property. Companies continue seeking technology assets that support payment networks, digital finance, and enterprise blockchain applications. Therefore, patent ownership remains an important competitive advantage across the sector.

IBM previously ranked among the largest blockchain patent holders alongside Bank of America. Circle’s acquisition transfers a significant portion of that intellectual property into the stablecoin issuer’s portfolio. Consequently, Circle strengthens its position as it expands blockchain-based financial products and services.

CRCL shares responded positively following the announcement despite broader declines over the past year. The company’s stock has fallen about 66% during the previous 12 months, while IBM shares have declined about 18% over the same period. Nevertheless, the patent acquisition adds strategic assets supporting Circle’s long-term expansion in onchain finance and blockchain infrastructure.
