This incident marks a significant governance shift within the Bitcoin BIP editorial process, as the removal of Luke Dashjr's editing privileges signals that the community is actively enforcing procedural norms around proposal handling. The BIP-110 soft fork's failure, with signaling peaking at just 2.53% against a 55% threshold, demonstrates the limited consensus behind the proposal and raises questions about how future contentious forks will be managed. Dashjr's simultaneous departure from his Ocean leadership roles, announced just minutes before the removal was confirmed, suggests a coordinated transition that could reshape his influence in Bitcoin development circles. Worth watching are whether the stalled chain at height 961,633 recovers, how the BIP editorial team revises its governance rules to prevent similar conflicts, and whether Dashjr's continued role as Bitcoin Knots maintainer creates new friction points within the ecosystem.

PANews, August 11 – The BIP-110 soft fork has stalled after support fell far short of the required threshold, leaving thousands of nodes stranded. Just two days after the event unfolded, the Bitcoin BIP editorial team revoked editing privileges from proposal lead Luke Dashjr on Monday. Editor Mark Erhardt moved for his removal, citing conflicts of interest, minimal contributions, steering a contentious fork, and a breakdown in coordination. Supporters of the motion pointed out that Dashjr used his editorial access to favor the BIP-110 proposal, assigning it a BIP number before any mailing list discussion and rapidly merging the pull request, while his own contributions have accounted for less than 1% since April 2024.
Signaling support for BIP-110 peaked at only 2.53%, well below the 55% threshold, and the enforced chain has stalled at height 961,633. Ocean was the only mining pool signaling before the fork and has since resumed non-BIP-110 work. Dashjr announced the suspension of his roles as Ocean chairman and CTO four minutes before the removal was confirmed, shifting his focus to Bitcoin open-source projects, though he remains the chief maintainer of Bitcoin Knots. Bitcoin’s price was unaffected by the incident.
