Sources say OpenAI is touting its ability to have multiple agents work together over long periods to solve particularly difficult problems, which can be applied to projects or advanced math problems. Astra will become a new class of models for OpenAI, following Sol, Terra, and Luna. It is not yet clear when OpenAI plans to release the model. OpenAI has also not decided whether Astra will be labeled as GPT 6 or as an additional model in the GPT 5 series (such as GPT 5.7). According to one of the people familiar with the matter, although these models are already in testing, they are expected to be among the first models submitted under the new framework planned by the Trump administration, which requires AI models to be submitted to the federal government before public release. The government-set self-imposed deadline is this weekend, with the goal of finalizing the framework before then. Separately, in the short term, OpenAI also plans to release a report detailing how it solved 10 previously unsolved math problems to showcase the capabilities of its most advanced AI.
