Cardano Makes History: First Fully Onchain-Governed Hard Fork Activated on Mainnet

Cardano has achieved a new milestone in blockchain governance. The Van Rossem hard fork activated on the Cardano mainnet on July 18, 2026, introducing Protocol Version 11.

This is the first time a Cardano hard fork received approval entirely through the network’s onchain governance system, without any founding-body coordination.

Cardano’s Voltaire-era governance structure, which includes Delegated Representatives (DReps), Stake Pool Operators (SPOs), and the Cardano Council (CC), successfully ratified the hard fork initiation action.

Van Rossem Hard Fork Brings Technical Improvements and Governance Milestone

The Van Rossem hard fork, named after Cardano developer Alexander van Rossem, introduces several technical improvements to the network. The upgrade focuses on Plutus script improvements, including new primitives and cost-model adjustments designed to lower smart-contract execution costs.

These changes give developers more flexibility when building decentralized applications on the Cardano blockchain.

The hard fork activated smoothly around 21:44 UTC on July 18, with node operators upgrading in advance to prevent chain splits. The successful activation required coordination among ecosystem partners, SPOs, DApps, developers, and exchanges across multiple networks to guarantee a safe mainnet event.

The governance milestone holds particular importance for Cardano’s long-term roadmap. Successfully shipping a hard fork via onchain votes proves that the network can now upgrade through its governance layer.

Cardano’s native token ADA saw a modest price increase following the hard fork activation. The cryptocurrency rose 1.5% in the last 24 hours to $0.166, slightly outperforming the broader market’s cautious uptick.

However, the move lacked high-volume conviction. This suggests that the price increase was amplified by positive sentiment and technical positioning rather than aggressive new buying. The primary driver remains the successful V11 hard fork activation, a key governance and technical milestone for the Cardano network.

ADA faces immediate resistance at the daily moving average 50 level near $0.168. A confirmed breakout above this resistance could see a test of the Fibonacci 38.2% retracement level near $0.176. The critical support zone rests around $0.13.

The successful activation of the Van Rossem hard fork through onchain governance is an important moment for Cardano. The network has shown that it can transition through decentralized decision-making while delivering meaningful technical improvements.
