The Beijing-based startup has shared a shareholder resolution seeking approval for the potential IPO, which could happen within six months. Goldman Sachs and China International Capital Corp have been in discussions about potential roles in the offering.

Moonshot is also closing a private funding round that could value the three-year-old company at more than $30 billion. Terms have not been finalized.

Revenue has grown fast. Annual recurring revenue reached $300 million in June, up from $200 million just two months earlier in April.

That growth follows the release of Kimi K3, an open-weight AI model containing 2.8 trillion parameters. Parameters are a measure of a model’s scale and processing capacity.

The model went on display at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on July 17. Its full release as an open-source model is scheduled for July 27.

How Kimi K3 Stacks Up

Third-party evaluators Artificial Analysis and Arena.ai ranked Kimi K3 on par with leading US models including OpenAI’s GPT systems and Anthropic’s Claude models.

In some frontier benchmarks, Artificial Analysis ranked it ahead of Anthropic’s Opus. It also placed first in web interface engineering, beating Anthropic’s Fable in blind human-preference tests.

Moonshot said Kimi K3 still trails Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 in overall capability.

The model is built to operate with minimal human supervision, making it suited for tasks like engineering and coding.

Market and Competitive Impact

Moonshot was founded in early 2023 by former Tsinghua University professor Yang Zhilin. It competes with DeepSeek, Alibaba’s Qwen, MiniMax, and Z.AI in China’s generative AI market.

Its products include paid chatbot subscriptions, enterprise model access, and Kimi Work, a general-purpose AI agent. Kimi K3 is priced closer to Anthropic’s Sonnet tier than most Chinese rivals.

The announcement hit competitors hard. Shares in Zhipu and MiniMax dropped roughly 27% and 16% respectively on the Hong Kong exchange.

Moonshot remains smaller than Z.AI, which is approaching $1 billion in annual sales. DeepSeek is separately considering an IPO in 2027.

Because Kimi K3 is open-source, outside developers can download, run, and modify it. That sets it apart from closed proprietary systems and could pressure Silicon Valley’s commercial AI model.

The US government recently forced Anthropic to temporarily pull its Fable and Mythos models over cybersecurity concerns. Those restrictions have since been lifted.
